The news that’s been flooding social media circles in the jewelry industry these past couple of days is: De Beers has announced the launch of a new... Lightbox Jewelry the new company, and will... 9 Synthetic diamonds officially go on sale this month. (Laboratory-grown diamonds) 。
A single stone stirs up a thousand ripples—this news has sparked widespread attention and discussion within the industry.
The discussion has mainly focused on what De Beers is trying to achieve with this move. ? What’s the future outlook for diamond prices? ? What impact does it have on diamond merchants? ? How testing organizations should respond ? What impact will the consumer market have? ? Here, let me also share my personal thoughts:
01 Regarding De Beers’ intentions
Personally, I believe that De Beers’ move to launch synthetic diamonds is ultimately aimed at consolidating its dominant position in the diamond industry. On the surface, increasing sales of synthetic diamonds might seem like a blow to natural diamonds, but in reality, I think it’s actually about safeguarding the market for natural diamonds.
02 The introduction of synthetic diamonds into the jewelry market is an inevitable trend.
It has been several decades since General Electric of the United States first succeeded in synthesizing diamonds. Over this time, synthetic diamond technology has continued to improve and refine. In recent years, breakthroughs have been made in overcoming technical bottlenecks, and gem-quality synthetic diamonds have gradually begun to enter the market. It is now an inevitable trend for synthetic diamonds to be introduced into the jewelry market.
03 It will deal a blow to domestic synthetic diamond manufacturers.
There are more than ten domestic synthetic diamond companies in China, with some of the better-known ones including Yujingangshi, Huanghe Xuanfeng, and Zhongnan Diamond. It is understood that currently, the price of their synthetic diamonds is roughly half that of natural diamonds. This time, De Beers has explicitly announced the pricing for its newly launched synthetic diamonds. 0.25 Kla 200 Dollar, 0.5 Kla 400 Dollar, 0.75 Kla 600 Dollar, 1 Kla 800 Dollar.
The price is significantly lower than that of synthetic diamonds currently available on the domestic market, which represents a major blow to domestic synthetic diamond manufacturers. This will force these manufacturers either to reduce production costs and selling prices in order to enhance their market competitiveness.
The trend in the synthetic and natural diamond markets will be coexistence of both.
De Beers has a very clear market positioning for synthetic diamonds: they are stylish and casual. On the one hand, this positioning conveys that synthetic diamonds are decorative accessories, highlighting their affordability; on the other hand, it subtly emphasizes that natural diamonds are high-end jewelry, characterized by their rarity and value preservation.
The culture of natural diamonds has long been deeply rooted in people’s hearts, and the introduction of synthetic diamonds will not easily shake their position. On the contrary, given their clearly distinct roles and positioning, the two types of diamonds will each carve out a niche for themselves in their respective markets.
05 The future of testing work still has a long way to go.
In recent years, many testing institutions have been diligently working to develop methods for detecting synthetic diamonds, and detection instruments have also been successively developed and successfully launched. In fact, thanks to the efforts of these institutions over the past few years, the technology for detecting synthetic diamonds has gradually been mastered. However, in my view, testing institutions still have a long way to go in the future. First, as large quantities of synthetic diamonds enter the market, the volume of testing work will inevitably increase. Second, the widespread mixing of natural and synthetic diamonds greatly complicates detection efforts and significantly boosts the workload. Third, the phenomenon of synthetic diamonds being used to falsely certify natural diamonds poses a serious challenge to testing institutions’ re-examination and anti-counterfeiting efforts.
06 Consumers are becoming more rational and have more choices.
De Beers’ move to officially announce the launch of synthetic diamond sales is actually good news for consumers. Synthetic diamonds are now openly available in the market, and De Beers’ promotion and popularization efforts will increase public awareness of synthetic diamonds, making sales more transparent and heightening consumers’ vigilance against unscrupulous merchants who pass off synthetics as natural diamonds. ; Meanwhile, thanks to De Beers’ highly clear and refined positioning of lab-grown diamond jewelry, with sufficient market development over time, different consumer segments will have an even wider range of choices.
At this moment, the author is reminded of Madame Loisel from Maupassant’s “The Necklace.” If knowledge about synthetic diamonds had been widely available back then, would her precious decade-long life have taken a different turn? ?
