Sri Lanka, along with Brazil, South Africa, Myanmar, and Thailand, is hailed as one of the world’s five most important gemstone-producing countries. To be considered a “gemstone country,” a nation must excel in both quality and quantity—specifically, in terms of the variety of gemstones available, the volume of individual gemstone types produced, and the average quality of the gemstones it mines.
Gemstone mining in Sri Lanka has a history spanning over 2,500 years. The host rocks containing gems are washed away by flowing water, mixing the gems with silt, gravel, and clay and scattering them across riverbeds, wetlands, farmlands, or at the foot of mountains—typically at depths ranging from 1.5 meters to 18 meters. The types of gems mined vary depending on the location. Due to the enormous scale of mining operations, one-third of the country's population is now employed in the gemstone industry, and sapphire production accounts for a significant portion of gemstone-related income.
● The combination of quantity and quality
Sri Lankan sapphires are world-renowned. Currently, the world’s largest sapphire—a 563-carat gem known as the “Star of India”—is housed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In the early 1980s, this region also yielded the “Star of Sri Lanka,” a 393-carat sapphire that ranks as the world’s third-largest and is now preserved as a national treasure in the National Museum in Colombo. Both of these gems are exceptionally rich in quality. Some star sapphires differ from the faceted sapphires we usually see.
In addition, both the National Museum in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, and the region’s larger gemstone shops have their own gem museums. These museums showcase not only rubies and sapphires but also a wide variety of other precious colored gems, including tourmaline, cat's eye, spinel, topaz, garnet, amethyst, and moonstone. They even feature numerous pink diamonds and blood-colored diamonds. In fact, even among sapphires, beyond the standard deep blue variety, there are also vividly rose-colored padparadscha sapphires and Sri Lanka’s unique orange-yellow sapphires.

Moreover, sapphires weighing below a certain carat often lack certification from recognized national gemological institutes. Besides artificially coloring various gemstones, special optical effects like the chatoyancy of alexandrite or the asterism of sapphire can also be faked. However, experienced buyers can distinguish between genuine “living” cat's eyes or star sapphires—those that exhibit natural movement and brilliance—and artificial ones, which tend to appear lifeless and static.
