This website reports: In November 2014 At the 7th China (Yiwu) Forest Products Expo, which opened on the 1st of the month, the Zhejiang Redwood Research Association released the “Standards for Identification and Evaluation of Redwood Products.” These standards specify four key elements for the identification and evaluation of redwood and its products: material quality, craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and brand recognition. At the same time, the standards provide guidelines on evaluation principles, methodological procedures, result grading, certification of evaluations, and organization of evaluation activities. The release of these standards offers an industry benchmark for the quality identification and evaluation of redwood and its products, the accurate labeling of goods, and the resolution of disputes arising during transactions. They will help standardize trading practices, evaluation and identification procedures, and dispute-resolution processes, as well as facilitate industry training and the development of specialized professionals.

This standard was organized and drafted by the Zhejiang Province Rosewood Research Association and is under the jurisdiction of the Zhejiang Province Forestry Standardization Technical Committee. The participating drafting units include: the Zhejiang Province Rosewood Research Association, the Zhejiang Province Forest Product Quality Inspection Station, the East China Forestry Property Exchange, Zhejiang A&F University, Zhejiang NianNianHong Home Furnishings Group Co., Ltd., and the Hangzhou City Institute of Quality and Technical Inspection. The principal drafters are: Wu Xiaoping, Wang Jiaming, Li Wenzhu, Shen Guohua, Lü Lianhua, Li Kang, Ni Yongzhong, Wang Ji, and Guo Mu.

The standard consists of a total of 9 sections: Scope, Normative Reference Documents, Terms and Definitions, Classification and Scope of Assessment, Assessment Principles and Assessment Elements, Assessment Methods, Assessment Grading and Assessment Certificates, Handling and Interpretation of Disputes, and Appendices.

Currently, the Zhejiang Province Rosewood Research Association is organizing the compilation of rosewood educational materials. Among these, “An Overview of Rosewood Resources” has been completed and released; preliminary drafts of “Theoretical and Practical Guidelines for the Identification, Appraisal, and Pricing of Rosewood and Its Products” and “Legal and Policy Framework for Rosewood Resource Management” have also been completed and are now being circulated within the industry for feedback.

The scope of business, approved by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, includes: 1. Providing redwood appraisal and authentication services; 2. Currently underway are the following research projects: 1. “The Circulation of Forest Rights and Cultivation Models for Redwood (Rare Tree Species)”; 2. “Special Supervision and Inspection of the Implementation of Forestry Administrative Licensing”; 3. “Research on the Entry of Private Capital into the Redwood Planting Industry,” among others.
