According to a message from BHP’s WeChat official account, the BHP Technology and Product Experience Exchange Meeting was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, on September 6. Jeremie Louis, BHP’s Global Vice President of Iron Ore Marketing, delivered a video address. Mr. Qi Bin, representing the China Iron and Steel Association, shared an analysis and outlook on the steel industry’s performance. More than 200 guests from domestic and international steel companies, trading firms, universities, and other institutions participated in the event both online and offline.
Jeremy Lewis stated that the Nanpo Mine will help ensure a stable supply of high-quality mac powder and Newman blended pellets, providing customers with new options for optimizing their base ore blends and production processes. The Nanpo Mine will increase the average grade of BHP’s iron ore products while maintaining low levels of harmful trace elements, thereby supporting the steel industry’s transition toward low-carbon development.
At the event site, Mr. Steve Campell, General Manager of BHP’s South Flank Mine, shared with the guests present the project journey of the South Flank Mine—from exploration to production.
The South Flank mine project of BHP was completed and put into operation on May 20 last year. The total investment in the mining area amounts to US$3.6 billion, with a designed sustainable annual production capacity of 80 million tons. This is Australia’s largest new iron ore project in fifty years. Since July last year, iron ore from the South Flank mine has been delivered smoothly to Chinese customers one after another.
At the exchange meeting, guests from Jiangsu Shagang, Baogang Group, Xinyu Iron and Steel, Shanxi Jianlong, Hebei Zongheng, Central South University, Newcastle University, HBIS Handan Steel, and Ningbo Iron and Steel shared and discussed micro-powder and Newman mixed blocks with participants from various perspectives, including basic research, production practices, application experience, and performance analysis.
Actively integrating into China’s new development paradigm and providing high-quality raw material supplies to an increasing number of Chinese steel enterprises in a more flexible manner has always been BHP’s key focus. In recent years, BHP has established close partnerships with major global steel companies and universities, jointly developing cutting-edge emission-reduction technologies and comprehensive solutions across the entire value chain. Over the next 25 years, the Nanpo Mine will remain committed to meeting the Chinese steel industry’s demand for high-quality iron ore, helping steel enterprises effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and actively promoting the industry’s green, low-carbon, and sustainable development.
