On the frozen Arctic tundra, people discovered this dazzling, exceptional, and rare yellow diamond.

In the remote Northwest Territories of Canada, people have discovered a massive yellow diamond weighing 552.74 carats at the Diavik Diamond Mine. In a place where temperatures can plummet as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius, the very discovery of natural diamonds is nothing short of a miracle.

This diamond mine, located in Canada, is one of the world’s renowned natural diamond mines, producing a large quantity of high-quality white diamonds each year and a small number of yellow diamonds (averaging fewer than five per year).

In 2015, the Diavik diamond mine unearthed a natural diamond weighing 187.63 carats, which was named the “Firefox” rough diamond. At the time, this was the largest gem-quality natural diamond ever mined in North America. Later, the diamond was cut into several smaller natural diamonds. Among them, a pair of pear-shaped natural diamonds weighing 37.87 carats and 36.80 carats respectively were sold at Christie’s New York auction in December 2018 for US$1.5 million.

In November 2020, this diamond mine also discovered a remarkable yellow diamond weighing 74.48 carats. This natural diamond, named “Diavik Helios,” boasts an astonishing brilliance that shines like the radiance of the sun.

In 2018, a massive yellow diamond weighing 552.74 carats was discovered at the Diavik Diamond Mine. With its stunning saturation and exceptional clarity, this giant yellow diamond immediately made the front pages of news outlets upon its discovery. After two years of masterful cutting and polishing by expert artisans, the raw gemstone was transformed into seven breathtakingly brilliant gems, which made a dazzling appearance at Christie’s “Magnificent Jewels” auction held in New York on June 8, 2021. Among them, particularly eye-catching was a 204.36-carat cushion-cut vivid yellow diamond named “The Dancing Sun,” which fetched a remarkable price of US$4.95 million.

Currently, the auction record for a yellow diamond is held by a vivid yellow diamond weighing 100.09 carats, belonging to the luxury brand Graff. In May 2014, it was sold at Sotheby’s Geneva auction for US$16.3 million, setting a new auction record at the time.

In 1878, the Tiffany Yellow Diamond—a 287-carat yellow diamond mined from the Kimberly Mine in South Africa—became one of the world’s most celebrated and rare yellow diamonds. In 1879, Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co., acquired this yellow diamond for $18,000. Under the personal supervision of George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany’s chief gemologist, the rough stone was meticulously cut into a cushion-shaped natural diamond weighing 128.54 carats. Thanks to its exceptional cutting craftsmanship, the Tiffany Yellow Diamond radiates an extraordinary brilliance and vivid hue that rivals the dazzling glow of sunlight. The diamond made its debut at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and it was once proudly displayed as the store’s signature treasure in Tiffany’s flagship boutique on Fifth Avenue in New York City. This exquisitely beautiful yellow diamond has been worn only twice: once by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and again by Lady Gaga on the red carpet at the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony. To this day, it has never been put up for sale.
