According to a report by MiningNews.net, Red Metals has for the first time announced the resource estimates for its Sybella rare-earth deposit in the Mount Isa region of Queensland, Australia. The scale of these resources exceeds expectations and could potentially rank among the top 10 globally.
The project is located 20 kilometers from Mount Isa.
Based on a critical grade of 0.02% for praseodymium and neodymium, the project estimates ore resources totaling 4.795 billion tons, with a total rare-earth oxide grade of 0.16%. Among these, the praseodymium and neodymium oxide grade is 0.0302%, and the dysprosium and terbium oxide grade is 0.0028%.
If the cut-off grade is raised to 0.03%, the ore resource amount will still reach 2.56 billion tons, with a lanthanum-neodymium oxide grade of 0.0331% and a dysprosium-terbium oxide grade of 0.0031%.
The above resource estimates could position Sibella among the world’s top 10 rare-earth mineral deposits, on a par with Energy Transition Minerals’ Kvanefjeld rare-earth mine in Greenland and CPWR’s (Pacific Wildcat Resources) Mrima Hill project in Kenya.
Located in the mining hub of Mount Isa, the project enjoys clear advantages: it will not face licensing issues, and it carries low environmental and sovereignty risks.
This project is rare globally, raising concerns about its beneficiation performance. However, preliminary experiments indicate that the mixed rare-earth oxide product can achieve a grade of up to 48.7%, with dysprosium and terbium—high-value elements—accounting for as much as 21%.
Preliminary studies indicate that this project can be developed into a low-cost, small-investment heap-leaching operation. In the early stages, the recoverable ore reserves amount to 788 million tons, with a lanthanum-neodymium oxide grade of 0.0297% and a dysprosium-terbium oxide grade of 0.0028%.
The orebody has good continuity, so we can upgrade the resource estimate to the inferred level without needing to significantly densify the drilling spacing. This work will begin immediately.
The company believes that this project still has great potential.
The ore body is located within a soft, rare-earth-rich granitic intrusion and comprises two parallel ore zones: the eastern zone measures 4.8 kilometers by 1.5 kilometers, while the western zone measures 7.2 kilometers by 0.4 to 1.2 kilometers.
The resource volume extends along strike for 8 kilometers, with an average depth of 100 meters. The maximum drilling depth reached 240 meters, and the ore body remains unpenetrated.
