On March 19, ITAC—the South African agency responsible for tariff reviews, trade remedies, and import-export controls—issued a notice announcing a tariff review of imported steel. The notice stated that this review is being conducted to address issues such as overcapacity in the global steel industry and the impact of imported products on the market, thereby ensuring the sustainable development of South Africa’s steel value chain and promoting economic growth in South Africa. ITAC plans to establish an import monitoring system and increase import tariffs on certain steel products. ITAC is seeking public input on these proposed measures and calls on stakeholders to submit their comments within four weeks from the date of the notice’s publication.
