On October 21, the Rainbow-3 medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) airborne geophysical integrated measurement system—developed independently by China—made its international debut at the off-site platform of the 2015 China International Mining Conference, showcased by the China Geological Survey. This marks the official transition of the Rainbow-3 system from a two-year trial operation and production phase into the civilian sector of geological surveys and mineral exploration, signaling its entry into the commercial use stage.
The Rainbow-3 system is the world’s first medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based geophysical integrated measurement system designed specifically for geological surveys, mineral exploration, and resource development. It integrates advanced airborne magnetic and radiometric measurement techniques and is primarily used in areas such as basic geological surveys, exploration for metallic minerals, and exploration for radioactive minerals. Compared with traditional manned-aircraft-based geophysical exploration systems, this system boasts four major advantages: high safety factor, superior measurement quality, enhanced operational efficiency, and a high degree of intelligence. The associated technologies are at the forefront of global advancements.
The Rainbow-3 system was jointly developed by the China Geological Survey, the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences under the China Geological Survey, the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics, and the Nuclear Industry Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing Center. Through the collaborative efforts of Chinese researchers, each unit can achieve a monthly workload of over 20,000 line-kilometers, with an average effective line length of 1,200 line-kilometers per flight. The system enables year-round operations under all weather conditions and effectively avoids time conflicts with civil aviation aircraft, thereby significantly enhancing both production efficiency and operational quality.
The annual China International Mining Conference serves as an important platform for practical cooperation between Chinese and foreign mining sectors. It provides a valuable channel for mining enterprises from both home and abroad to collaborate in the Chinese and international markets, and creates opportunities for building business networks and expanding cooperative ventures.
For a long time, China’s airborne geophysical survey equipment has been constrained by factors such as international aircraft scheduling, equipment transportation, overseas maintenance and servicing, varying site conditions across different countries, and mission costs—preventing its effective deployment abroad. The Rainbow-3 system, with its modular production and containerized transport, has significantly enhanced the efficiency of equipment transportation, maintenance, and repair. This public debut represents a perfect showcase of China’s drone products successfully transitioning from civilian industrial applications to the international stage, marking a transformative leap from technological achievements toward industrialization. It will undoubtedly accelerate the global rise of domestically produced drones in the field of geological surveys.
