Deloitte recently released “Smart Mines.” —— The report titled “Creating True Value” (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”) states that, in the process of exploring and building smart mines, mining companies need to fully understand the approaches to transformation and the entry points for digital transformation, so as to maximize the benefits of adopting new technologies.
The report points out that currently, mining companies worldwide are facing the challenge of declining ore grades and reduced operational efficiency. Due to the inherent high variability of ore bodies, mining companies themselves find it difficult to tackle this challenge. Moreover, mining companies are also hampered by issues such as costly infrastructure, slow implementation processes, hazardous working environments, and the associated significant safety risks.
Xu Bin, Managing Partner in charge of the mining industry at Deloitte China, stated: “ The future of digitalization holds tremendous promise, enabling businesses to make faster and better decisions, thereby reducing performance volatility and enhancing equipment utilization and safety. Mining companies can move away from passive management approaches and adopt new management and operational practices, equipping themselves with foresight and confidence as they look toward the future. ”
The report shows that mining companies will reap several benefits from implementing digital transformation. First, evidence-based insights can help enterprises improve work quality, reduce losses during execution, and achieve improvement rates of up to... 10%~20% Second, technology helps automate processes and improve system decision-making. The expected improvement rate in this area could reach... 20%~30% Third, by integrating and optimizing all technologies across the value chain, mining companies can drive overall transformation, with expected improvement rates reaching— 50% The above.
By serving and collaborating with numerous mining companies, Deloitte has identified the following key challenges that are hindering the pace of digital transformation in the mining industry: First, companies are opting for off-the-shelf, fragmented solutions that do not align with their specific goals; second, technology vendors are unable to effectively implement their solutions; third, there is limited understanding of the impact on the workforce and the changes to work processes; fourth, companies underestimate the importance of an agile approach to transformation and should instead focus on adaptive planning, early delivery, and continuous improvement; fifth, they fail to adjust their governance models to support agile principles; sixth, accountability for the digital transformation agenda is fragmented; and seventh, there is a widespread tendency to focus on project outputs rather than business outcomes.
Xu Bin believes: “ To successfully advance the construction of smart mines, it is essential to carry out a comprehensive organizational transformation. In this process, mining companies cannot simply adopt new technologies—they must also fundamentally change their business operating models. In an environment characterized by rapid technological advancements, solutions are often highly specialized and designed to drive breakthroughs in performance. Therefore, we recommend adopting... ‘ Focus on the big picture - Small-scale trial - Rapidly expand ’ the approach that enables transformation to create substantial business value and ensures the sustainable development of smart mines. ”
