Comrade Tang Yi, an outstanding member of the China Democratic Alliance and a distinguished geologist in our country, passed away in Beijing at 7:15 p.m. on August 5, 2016, at the age of 80, due to illness.
Comrade Tang Yi, born in August 1936, is from Sichuan. He attended Wusheng Lie Mian Middle School in Guang'an and Nankai Middle School in Chongqing. In 1955, he enrolled in the Department of Geology at Chongqing University. In 1956, he transferred to the Exploration Department of the Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration—originally established on the basis of the Department of Geology at Chongqing University and supplemented by faculty members from the Beijing College of Geology and the Changchun College of Geology—which is now known as Chengdu University of Technology. In 1960, he began working at the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Geology, where he focused on identifying mineral resources urgently needed by the nation. From 1965 to 1978, he worked as a geological explorer with the Third Geological Team of the Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, engaged in geological exploration and mineral prospecting. After 1979, he has been continuously involved in teaching and research at the Yunnan College of Land and Resources (formerly the Yunnan Provincial University for Geology Workers). From 1988 to 1992, he undertook research assignments at the National Committee on Mineral Reserves.
Comrade Tang Yi is the founder of the SD reserve estimation method, which is one of the three internationally recognized methods for estimating mineral resource reserves and has been incorporated into China’s national standards. He is also one of the pioneers in developing mathematical-geological methods for estimating mineral resource reserves worldwide. The SD reserve calculation and verification method he uniquely invented and developed has been universally acknowledged as reaching an internationally leading level. This breakthrough marked the first time that China independently developed its own methodology for estimating mineral resource reserves, establishing a Chinese standard system for mineral resource reserve estimation based on its own intellectual property rights. As a result, China has solidified its position in international mineral resource reserve estimation technology and gained the right to participate in the formulation of international mining standards.
Comrade Tang Yi devoted his entire life to the nation’s geological and mineral resources sector, making outstanding contributions to the innovation and development of techniques for estimating mineral resource reserves—both in China and worldwide. His untimely passing represents not only a significant loss for China’s geological and mineral resources and geological sciences communities but also a tremendous loss for the international geological and mineral resources community.
Comrade Tang Yi is approachable and of noble character. He is not only a respected, ordinary geologist who has devoted his entire life to the cause of geological and mineral resources, but also a calligrapher whose works vividly embody the profound richness of Chinese calligraphy culture and are deeply loved by people. His uniquely distinctive calligraphic works are widely collected and treasured both at home and abroad. This profoundly reflects his deep love for life and his pursuit of the sublime beauty of nature.
Comrade Tang Yi is a role model and example for us to learn from!
