Their disadvantages include dispersed resources and low-grade raw ore. These ores are mainly found in coastal and inland sedimentary layers in South Africa, Australia, India, and countries in South America.
The primary sources of native ilmenite include the Aillid Lake ilmenite-titanite deposit in Canada, which is currently one of the world’s major deposits of native ilmenite. This deposit is Canada’s most significant and only commercially mined ilmenite mine. The deposit is hosted within a gabbro intrusion, and the ore bodies extend over a length of 1,100 meters. , 1050 m wide, The deposit is 6 to 60 meters thick, with mineral reserves totaling 90 million tons. The rough concentrate obtained after primary beneficiation contains 34.3% TiO₂. The Lødeset mine deposit features ore containing 30% WO₃ and 4% TiO₂, with mineral reserves ranging from 5 to 10 million tons. The ore body at this mine measures 1,600 meters in length and 270 meters in width, with mineral reserves of approximately 100 million tons. The Outokumpu deposit in Finland is 50 meters long and 15 meters thick, with mineral reserves totaling 15 million tons. The Bushveld deposit in South Africa boasts enormous reserves—mineral reserves reach as much as 2 billion tons—but given the country’s abundant placer deposits, this deposit is primarily exploited for iron and vanadium rather than titanium.
