The Federative Republic of Brazil covers an area of 8.515 million square kilometers, making it the largest country in Latin America by land area. Its population stands at 189.32 million, the highest in Latin America. Among the population, whites account for 54.03%, mixed-race individuals (of white and black ancestry) make up 39.94%, blacks represent 5.39%, Asians comprise 0.46%, and indigenous peoples account for approximately 0.16%. The official language is Portuguese, and the capital is Brasília.
Brazil is located in southeastern South America. To the north, it borders French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, and Colombia; to the west, it shares borders with Peru and Bolivia; to the south, it adjoins Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay; and to the east, it faces the Atlantic Ocean. Its coastline stretches over 7,400 kilometers, with a territorial sea width of 12 nautical miles and an exclusive economic zone extending 188 nautical miles beyond its territorial waters. Eighty percent of the country’s territory lies within the tropical zone, while its southernmost region enjoys a subtropical climate.
In 2008, Brazil’s GDP reached 2.9 trillion reais (approximately 2.3 reais to the U.S. dollar), representing a 5.1% increase over 2007. Per capita GDP stood at 15,240 reais, up 4.0% year-on-year. The annual inflation rate was 5.9%. In 2008, total investment in Brazil accounted for 19% of GDP—2.5 times the GDP growth rate. At year-end, foreign exchange reserves totaled 194 billion U.S. dollars, while external debt amounted to 200.1 billion U.S. dollars. Brazil’s economic strength ranks among the top in Latin America, and its GDP, calculated in U.S. dollars, placed it tenth globally. Exports of mineral products are a major source of Brazil’s foreign trade surplus. In 2006, the value of Brazil’s mining output accounted for roughly 6% of its GDP.
I. Mineral Resources
Brazil is a country rich in mineral resources, with many of its key minerals ranking among the world’s top producers. These include petroleum, iron ore, manganese ore, niobium-tantalum ores, nickel ore, tin ore, zinc ore, lithium ore, bauxite, graphite, kaolin, talc, vermiculite, and magnesite. Currently, there are over 50 types of minerals for which reserves have been confirmed.
1. Resource reserves
(1) Energy minerals
Brazil's energy and mineral resources include five types: coal, petroleum, natural gas, uranium ore, and oil shale.
Coal: Brazil has relatively scarce coal resources, with proven reserves totaling only 7.059 billion tons. The vast majority of these reserves are concentrated in three southern states: Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paraná. Moreover, the quality of Brazil’s coal resources is also relatively poor: the coal contains a low carbon content and a high ash content, which poses challenges for its exploitation and utilization.
Oil: Brazil is the second-largest oil- and gas-rich country in South America, after Venezuela. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, June 2008, Brazil’s proven and recoverable oil reserves stand at 1.67 billion tons. The two key oil- and gas-bearing basins are the Campos Basin and the Santos Basin. Brazil’s oil and gas resources are predominantly concentrated in the offshore Campos and Santos Basins; offshore oil reserves account for 88% of Brazil’s total reserves. The Campos Basin is located offshore in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With a total basin area of 175,200 square kilometers, it lies almost entirely offshore and serves as Brazil’s primary oil-and-gas accumulation zone and major oil-and-gas production region.
In recent years, Brazil has made continuous new breakthroughs in deepwater exploration, leading to a substantial increase in oil and gas reserves. Oil reserves rose from 1.13 billion tons in 2000 to 1.67 billion tons in 2007, representing a growth of 48.2%.
Natural gas: Brazil’s proven natural gas reserves total 347.733 billion cubic meters, with the majority located offshore. Onshore, Brazil’s proven natural gas reserves are primarily concentrated in six states, including Amazonas, Bahia, Alagoas, Rio Grande do Norte, Espírito Santo, and Sergipe.
Uranium mine: Brazil is rich in uranium resources, with proven reserves totaling approximately 163,000 tons, at a U3O8 grade of 0.104%. These identified reserves account for 6% of the world’s total identified uranium reserves. Currently, Brazil has conducted uranium resource exploration on only 25% of its territory. According to available exploration data, uranium resources are primarily concentrated in the states of Bahia (BA), Ceará (CE), Paraná (PR), and Minas Gerais (MG).
(2) Major metallic mineral resources
Brazil's metallic mineral resources primarily include iron ore, manganese ore, bauxite, tin ore, niobium-tantalum ore, copper ore, lead-zinc ore, nickel ore, and gold ore, among others.
Iron ore: Brazil boasts extremely abundant iron ore resources, with proven reserves totaling 16 billion tons, ranking fifth in the world. The country’s iron ore reserves hold significant potential for future exploration. The majority of Brazil’s iron ore resources are concentrated in the state of Minas Gerais, accounting for 70.0%; the state of Mato Grosso do Sul accounts for 21.5%; the northern state of Pará accounts for 7.3%; and other states together account for 1.2%. Brazil’s two largest iron ore mining regions—the Iron Quadrangle and Carajás—are both world-class, super-large iron ore deposits operated by Vale S.A. (CVRD) and MBR Mining Company. Vale S.A. alone produces 80% of Brazil’s total iron ore output. The vast majority of Brazil’s iron ore types are hematite and taconite.
Manganese ore: Brazil has relatively abundant manganese ore resources, with proven reserves totaling 132 million tons, ranking fourth in the world.
Bauxite: Brazil is rich in bauxite resources, with proven reserves totaling 2.7 billion tons, accounting for 8.4% of the world’s bauxite reserves and ranking third globally. More than 90% of Brazil’s bauxite resources are concentrated in the state of Pará, located in northern Brazil.
Tin ore: Brazil’s proven tin reserves amount to 777,000 tons, accounting for approximately 12.4% of the world’s total tin resources. In recent years, Brazil’s tin reserves have declined significantly, primarily because alluvial tin deposits with high SnO2 grades are nearly exhausted, and investment in tin exploration has been insufficient, resulting in limited new reserve discoveries. Consequently, Brazil’s position in the global tin resource landscape has sharply deteriorated. The remaining tin resources in Brazil are mainly concentrated in Mapuera Province, Amazonas State, and Rondônia Province in the Amazon region.
Niobium-tantalum ore: Brazil boasts extremely abundant niobium and tantalum mineral resources, with proven reserves of 3.761 million tons and 884,000 tons, respectively—both ranking first in the world. These resources are primarily concentrated in the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás.
Copper mine: Brazil’s proven copper reserves total 14.365 million tons, primarily concentrated in the states of Pará and Goiás. Further exploration is underway at copper deposits in Pará, with promising resource prospects. These copper deposits are polymetallic, containing gold, silver, and molybdenum.
Gold Mines: Brazil’s proven gold reserves stand at 1,800 tons. In recent years, Brazil’s gold reserves have grown significantly, with the majority concentrated in the state of Pará (40%), Minas Gerais (33%), Goiás (9%), Bahia (6%), and Mato Grosso (4%).
Nickel ore: Brazil’s proven nickel reserves amount to 8.3 million tons, primarily concentrated in the states of Pará and Goiás. In recent years, the rapid growth in global demand for nickel driven by the development of the stainless steel industry, coupled with rising nickel prices, has spurred increased investment in nickel exploration in Brazil, leading to a significant expansion in nickel reserves.
Zinc ore: Brazil’s proven zinc reserves total 6.2 million tons, with 84.6% located in the state of Minas Gerais, 8.1% in Rio Grande do Sul, and the remaining 7.3% distributed elsewhere. The primary types of zinc ores in Brazil are smithsonite and hemimorphite, containing between 16% and 39% zinc, as well as sphalerite, which contains between 5.0% and 5.2% zinc.
(3) Major non-metallic minerals
Brazil's major non-metallic mineral resources include graphite, kaolin, talc and steatite, magnesite, and vermiculite.
Graphite: Brazil’s proven graphite reserves amount to 113 million tons, making it extremely rich in graphite resources. Brazil ranks second in the world in terms of proven graphite reserves. Graphite deposits are found in nearly every state in Brazil; however, the majority of economically viable graphite reserves are concentrated in the states of Minas Gerais, Ceará, and Bahia. The combined proven graphite reserves of these three states total 104.8 million tons, accounting for 93% of Brazil’s total proven graphite reserves. Brazil’s highest-quality graphite deposits are located in the city of Pedra Azul.
Kaolin: Brazil boasts proven reserves of 7.7 billion tons of kaolin. It is the world’s third-largest producer and exporter of kaolin, following the United States and the United Kingdom, and specializes in producing high-quality coated kaolin for papermaking. Kaolin deposits formed from the weathering of granites, pegmatites, and other crystalline rocks are found in many regions across Brazil. The weathering products of these rocks are transported and deposited, giving rise to large-scale secondary deposits. The region along the Jari River (a tributary of the Amazon River) is the primary area for the production of secondary kaolin deposits. Ninety-seven percent of Brazil’s kaolin resources are concentrated in the northern states of Pará, Amapá, and Amazonas. These kaolin resources are owned by Minera??o Horboy Clays Ltd.
Magnesite: Brazil’s proven reserves of magnesite amount to 345 million tons, accounting for 8.9% of the world’s magnesite resources. Brazil’s magnesite deposits are located exclusively in the Serra das Águas and Brumado regions of Bahia State. The magnesite occurs within Precambrian dolomites and quartzites, and is often found together with dolomite, talc, quartz crystals, and magnesite itself in lens-shaped ore bodies. The ore bodies can extend up to 1,000 meters in length. Magnesite typically occurs as flaky or massive aggregates; among these, massive magnesite aggregates are of industrial significance. The most typical magnesite exhibits a fine-to-medium grain size and appears white or gray in color.
Talc and Pyrophyllite: The proven reserves of talc and pyrophyllite in Brazil amount to 1.258 billion tons. Talc deposits are primarily located in the state of Bahia, where they occur in association with magnesite. Both talc and magnesite are found in dolomitic rocks that form part of the Precambrian complex basement. Industrially valuable talc deposits occur either as isolated large talc veins or as talc zones composed of numerous closely spaced fine talc veins. The talc is typically fine-grained and dense; high-purity talc is used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, while ordinary talc serves as a filler and coating material in paints, paper, and plastics.
Vermiculite: Brazil’s proven reserves of vermiculite amount to 23 million tons, accounting for 10.3% of the world’s total proven vermiculite reserves. These reserves are primarily located in the states of Goiás, Paraíba, Bahia, Piauí, and São Paulo.
Diamond: Half of Brazil’s diamond production is gem-quality, and the other half is industrial-grade. Diamond mining takes place in alluvial and riverine areas in the states of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, and Bahia; however, no primary kimberlite deposits have been found.
Phosphate rock: Brazil’s proven phosphate reserves amount to 246 million tons, making it the largest producer of phosphates in South America. Deposits of apatite are found in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Santa Catarina, and Pernambuco. Brazil’s phosphate deposits have an igneous origin and are all hosted within igneous complexes. For example, the Jacupiranga Complex in São Paulo consists of peridotite, norite, apatite, ilmenite-harzburgite, and carbonate rocks; the ore contains 4.9% P₂O₅. The ore layers are approximately 40 to 120 meters thick. After extraction, mining companies process the ore through flotation to produce a concentrate with a P₂O₅ content of 35% to 36%.
Crystal: Brazil is the world’s largest producer of quartz crystals. Quartz deposits are found in pegmatite belts that run roughly parallel to Brazil’s coastline. The primary quartz deposits occur within veins in sedimentary rocks—particularly sandstones and quartz arenites—from the upper part of the Lower Cambrian through the Silurian period. The most important mining region is in the state of Minas Gerais, with secondary deposits located in states such as Santa Catarina, Paraíba, Bahia, and Rio de Janeiro.
Kyanite: Brazil began large-scale production of kyanite in the 1970s. The ore deposits are located in the state of Minas Gerais, and the mineral-bearing rock formations consist of Precambrian quartzites, gneisses, and schists. The schists contain both kyanite and garnet, serving as an important source of residual kyanite deposits. The residual layer can reach a thickness of 2 meters, with kyanite accounting for approximately 25%, garnet for 20%, muscovite for 15%, quartz for 10%, and clay iron oxides for 30%. These deposits overlie rounded low hills. Kyanite typically occurs as individual, fresh, platy crystals ranging in color from reddish-brown and blue to transparent. Annual kyanite production amounts to about 50,000 tons.
2. Mineral exploration

According to Brazil’s Ministry of Mines, the Companhia de Pesquisa de Recursos Minerais (CPRM), which is affiliated with the Brazilian Geological Survey, is currently conducting basic geological mapping projects, mineralization age and hydrogeological mapping projects, as well as exploration projects targeting prospective areas. The Companhia de Pesquisa de Recursos Minerais (CPRM) has also established geological and economic databases for coal, copper deposits, diamonds, gold deposits, kaolin, nickel deposits, peat, and zinc deposits, in order to assist investors in the mining sector.
