The School of Jewelry at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) is a teaching and research institution whose primary mission is jewelry education.

　　In 1989, the Jewelry Institute, in collaboration with the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, launched the GIA Gemologist Certificate Program. This made it one of the earliest institutions in China to introduce an internationally advanced gemology education system, thereby significantly accelerating the development of gemology education in China. Building on the study of international modern gemology theories and skills, the Jewelry Institute developed its own gemstone and diamond courses and established the GIC brand, training a large number of professional talents for China’s jewelry and jewelry industry.

　　Meanwhile, the Jewelry Institute is also one of only three nationally designated pre-examination training centers for the National Jewelry and Jade Quality Inspector certification.

　　Since 1994, the Jewelry College has been responsible for undergraduate education in gemology. In 2000, with formal approval from the Ministry of Education of China, it established an undergraduate program in Gemology and Materials Processing Technology— a program that is market-oriented and future-focused. Currently, the college enrolls undergraduates in both the Gemology and Materials Processing Technology major and the Jewelry and Accessory Design major. At the same time, it also trains master’s and doctoral students in gemology at higher levels, with master’s graduates emerging every year. Together, these efforts have created a multi-level jewelry education system.

　　The Jewelry Institute boasts several renowned experts who wield significant influence in the jewelry industry. Among its current full-time and part-time faculty, 77.8% hold senior titles such as professor and associate professor; 61% possess master’s degrees or higher, including 22% with doctoral degrees. This forms a faculty team characterized by high professional competence, advanced academic standards, and a strong commitment to their work.

　　Over the years, the Jewelry College has been diligently engaged in scientific research and academic exchanges both domestically and internationally in the field of gemology, achieving significant breakthroughs in the study of diamonds, jadeite, colored gemstones, and organic gems such as pearls. The academic journal “Journal of Gems and Gemology,” sponsored by the Jewelry College, and the annual Gemological Conference held regularly in Wuhan have provided important platforms for academic exchange at home and abroad.

　　The newly completed 4,000-square-meter teaching building of the Jewelry College is equipped with state-of-the-art teaching laboratories and research facilities. It also houses the Jewelry Testing Center of China University of Geosciences, the Hubei Province Jewelry and Jade Quality Supervision and Inspection Station, the Wuhan City Gold, Silver, and Jewelry Inspection Station, a gemstone trading base, a gemstone identification instrument R&D center, and a jewelry design and manufacturing center. Leveraging its extensive knowledge, advanced technologies, and cutting-edge equipment, the college provides services—including jewelry testing, jewelry identification instruments, jewelry sales, and consulting—primarily to Hubei Province and other regions across China. At the same time, it serves as a comprehensive platform for students to engage in industry-academia-research integrated education and training.
