Recently, the “1:50,000 Mineral Prospecting Survey of the Qianhongquan-Heishan Beituan Area in Yumen City, Gansu Province” project—operating in the Qianhongquan area north of Beishan in Gansu Province—has made a new discovery of a large gold deposit, adding over 40 tons of gold resources, equivalent to two large-scale gold mines. This represents the largest achievement in gold resource exploration since the establishment of the Gansu Provincial Geological Exploration Fund Project in 2009.
Gansu Province ranks second in the country in terms of gold resources. The Beishan mineralization belt is an important region for the occurrence of gold deposits in Gansu Province. In 2017, the Department of Natural Resources of Gansu Province launched the aforementioned project. Based on an analysis of the regional metallogenic geological setting, the Fourth Geological Exploration Institute of the Gansu Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources concluded that this area has great potential for gold exploration. The institute organized a team of experts to collect 6,177 water-system sediment samples and delineated 16 comprehensive anomalies primarily associated with gold. In 2018, the Qianhongquan gold prospect was discovered. From 2019 to 2020, focused exploration efforts were carried out along the ore-bearing zone, successfully extending the exploration area to over 10 kilometers and identifying multiple gold ore bodies meeting industrial-grade standards, thus laying a crucial foundation for the continuation of exploration under the fund-supported project. In 2021, building upon the extension of the gold mineralization zone under the mineral survey project, the Fourth Geological Exploration Institute of the Gansu Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources applied to expand the exploration area to 26.04 square kilometers, officially establishing the Qianhongquan gold mine as the main battlefield for the large-scale exploration and reserve augmentation campaign.
Following the implementation of the new round of strategic actions for breakthroughs in mineral exploration, the Gansu Provincial Department of Natural Resources has intensified its exploration efforts and increased investment. The Qianhongquan gold mine prospecting project has so far accumulated an expenditure of 76.28 million yuan, with a total of 30,000 cubic meters of trench exploration and over 35,000 meters of drilling completed. A new gold-mineralized zone has been discovered, measuring approximately 14 kilometers in length and 10 to 100 meters in width, adding more than 40 tons of recoverable gold resources.
The Qianhongquan gold deposit was discovered gradually through large-scale geochemical exploration methods, building on the foundation of basic geological surveys. It is of great significance for the exploration of gold deposits associated with ductile shear zones in the southern belt of the Beishan region in Gansu Province, particularly in terms of selecting exploration methods and techniques, as well as providing valuable insights into prospecting strategies and directions.
