We learned from China Minmetals Corporation that the “4+2” ten-thousand-ton lithium salt project of China Salt Lake Group, a subsidiary of China Minmetals, has recently been successfully put into operation in Golmud, Qinghai Province. This marks another significant step forward in the company’s concerted efforts to build a world-class salt lake industrial base.
According to the introduction, the “4+2” ten-thousand-ton lithium salt project refers to the China Salt Lake Group’s integrated basic lithium salt project with a capacity of 40,000 tons per year and a lithium carbonate project with a capacity of 20,000 tons per year.
Lithium, hailed as the “king of metals” of the future, is a crucial foundational resource for the development of strategic emerging industries and plays a vital role in achieving the energy transition and the “dual-carbon” goals. For a long time, China has relied heavily on foreign sources for its lithium resources, with imports accounting for a large share, which has constrained the development of related industries.
According to information from China Minmetals, the newly commissioned lithium salt project employs globally leading technology, effectively overcoming the bottlenecks in traditional brine-based lithium extraction techniques and significantly enhancing both the efficiency and quality of lithium resource recovery. The project also leverages initiatives such as photovoltaic installation and the use of green electricity to help achieve the future goal of “zero-carbon lithium extraction.”
It is understood that the smooth commissioning of the lithium salt project by China Salt Lake Group will help enhance our country's ability to ensure a stable supply and secure the lithium resource chain, as well as improve our technological and equipment levels. This will further strengthen our country's capacity for independent control over the lithium-ion battery industry chain. Moreover, it will contribute to bolstering ecological protection on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and building our nation into a highland of ecological civilization.
A relevant official from China Minmetals stated that the company will take this as a new starting point, seize development opportunities, strengthen technological innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and strictly adhere to safety standards and environmental protection red lines. The company is committed to making this project a model, brand-name, and benchmark project that leads the global development of the salt lake industry.
