Vanadium was first discovered by a Spanish mineralogist and later by a Swedish chemist. Because its compounds exhibit a dazzling array of vibrant colors, it was named “vanadium,” in honor of Freyja—the beautiful goddess from Norse mythology, also known as Vanadis. Vanadium is typically found in ore deposits as a co-occurring mineral. By deposit type, magmatic vanadium deposits are commonly associated with vanadium-titanium magnetite; sedimentary vanadium deposits are often found in sediments closely linked to carbon and hydrocarbons; metamorphic vanadium deposits are predominantly hosted in clays within tectonically altered zones; additionally, some vanadium is also present in surface polymetallic oxide zones.
Vanadium has a wide range of applications. Adding even small amounts of vanadium to steel can significantly enhance its elasticity and strength, as well as its resistance to high temperatures and extreme cold—hence the saying, “Steel is the tiger; vanadium is its wings.” When steel contains vanadium, it’s like giving the tiger an extra pair of wings. Vanadium is also an essential component in numerous alloys, finding applications in fields such as automotive, aerospace, and defense industries. Moreover, vanadium holds great potential in energy storage: solid-state vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) can serve as a lithium-ion alternative for electric vehicles and the utility market. China is a major country rich in vanadium resources and is also the world’s largest producer and consumer of vanadium, holding a crucial position in the global vanadium supply chain.
