Hidden deep in the mountains, South Red Agate boasts a vibrant red color, a smooth and gentle texture, and a long history, making it highly prized by collectors. The name "South Red Agate" derives from its origin in southern Xinjiang, China. Today, most South Red Agate comes from the newly discovered mines in the Daliang Mountains in southern Sichuan, with some also sourced from Baoshan in Yunnan. However, compared to Baoshan’s South Red Agate, the South Red Agate from the Daliang Mountains is significantly cheaper on the market.

The common colors of Nan Hong agate—including brocade red (including persimmon red), rose red, cinnabar red, red-and-white material, banded red material, and cherry red—are generally considered to be the various color types of Nan Hong. These colors, which range from transparent to semi-transparent, including nearly colorless, transparent shades, are broadly defined as belonging to the color spectrum of Nan Hong.

The Nanhong jade from Baoshan, Yunnan, often exhibits numerous cracks. As the saying goes, “Nine out of ten pieces have been treated with glue,” because without glue, it would be extremely difficult to carve beads measuring 2.0 mm in size from such cracked material. The Nanhong from Baoshan is mainly divided into two types: Dongshan material and Xishan material. Dongshan material typically displays a persimmon-yellow hue, though occasionally it can reach a deep persimmon-red color. In contrast, Xishan material—particularly from Yangliu and Dishuidong—is relatively newer; persimmon-red and persimmon-yellow hues are less common here, and the texture tends to be more "fleshy," reminiscent of Sichuan Red. However, both mining areas do yield large-sized stones suitable for bead production. Compared to Dongshan material, Xishan material has fewer cracks. Moreover, after optimization, Dongshan material loses its glassy luster on the surface, appearing visually darker and giving off a matte, frosted impression.
