In recent years, synthetic diamonds have once again become a hot topic of discussion in the industry. With advancements in technology, synthetic diamonds have seen significant improvements in color, clarity, and carat weight, and colored synthetic diamonds have also begun to appear in the domestic market. Therefore, during this June’s Hong Kong Jewellery Show, the Hong Kong Gemmological Association organized a seminar titled “Comprehensive Identification Techniques and Market Assessment of Synthetic Diamonds.” The seminar was led by Dr. Yuan Zhizhong, a doctoral candidate from the Department of Earth Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. Dr. Yuan provided insights into the latest developments in synthetic diamond technology, methods for identifying synthetic diamonds, the current state of the synthetic diamond market, emerging market trends, and pricing dynamics, and engaged in lively exchanges with the participants.
Yuan Zhizhong explained that synthetic diamonds share the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. Moreover, synthetic diamonds of comparable quality are significantly cheaper than natural diamonds. The main difference between the two lies in their growth processes.
Yuan Zhizhong stated that, as natural diamonds become increasingly scarce, synthetic diamonds can serve as a new gemstone category to gradually fill the market gap left by natural diamonds. Therefore, synthetic diamonds have promising market prospects. He hopes that people will gain a better understanding of synthetic diamonds and help establish a reasonable market position for them.
It is understood that currently, synthetic diamonds are mainly produced using the chemical vapor deposition method ( CVD ) and the high-temperature, high-pressure method ( High-temperature, high-pressure ) Primarily focused on production, its price is 30 percent lower than that of natural diamonds, giving it a certain market presence.
Yuan Zhizhong stated that currently, Russia's... NGT The company is now capable of producing ultra-large diamonds of exceptionally high quality. Currently, their price is about 50% to 60% of that of natural diamonds, and in the future, it could drop to as low as 20% to 30%. As for medium-sized diamonds... 0.1 Kla ~1 Currently, lab-grown diamonds are available at a 70% to 80% discount. However, due to high production costs, the prices of medium- and large-sized diamonds remain less than ideal and aren't significantly different from those of natural diamonds. “In the future, prices could drop to as low as 30% to 40% off. Lower prices will be the primary factor driving consumer acceptance of lab-grown diamonds,” explained Yuan Zhizhong.
Yuan Zhizhong has been engaged in diamond processing, teaching, and appraisal, as well as research and production of synthetic diamonds for nearly... 40 Over the years, it has obtained dozens of patents for new diamond-cutting designs and boasts extensive research achievements in the field of synthetic diamonds.
