The China Mining Industry Index shows that in June 2018, the coal industry index stood at 125.3, up 3.6% year-on-year and 0.5% month-on-month (Figure 1); the non-ferrous metals industry index was 188.8, up 2.8% year-on-year and 0.04% month-on-month (Figure 2); the ferrous metals industry index was 134.0, down 4.3% year-on-year but up 0.03% month-on-month (Figure 3); and the oil and gas industry index was 124.0, up 6.0% year-on-year and 0.7% month-on-month (Figure 4).
In June 2018, China’s mining index generally showed an upward trend and performed better than the previous month. All sector indices recorded month-on-month growth, and with the exception of ferrous metals, indices for coal, non-ferrous metals, and oil & gas industries all posted year-on-year growth. Overall, China’s mining market remains in a period of structural adjustment, yet the underlying trend of steady improvement continues unchanged (Figure 5).

Indicator Description: The China Mining Industry Index primarily refers to the mining, beneficiation, and processing manufacturing sector among industrial enterprises above a designated size—specifically, coal mining and washing, non-ferrous metal mining and beneficiation, ferrous metal mining and beneficiation, and oil and gas extraction. The indicators included in the China Mining Industry Index comprise 10 metrics: the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock indices, total import value, main business revenue of mining enterprises, M2 money supply, National Bureau of Statistics’ PMI, output value index of major mineral products, fixed asset investment in the mining industry, power generation, inventory levels, and price indices—all based on 1990 as the base year. Due to the time lag in data release, the June 2018 data are preliminary estimates; if significant discrepancies arise, they will be corrected once the definitive data are released.
The China Mining Industry Index is compiled by the Institute of Land and Resources Economics under the Ministry of Natural Resources and is jointly released by the Institute and the China Mining News. □
