According to a report by BNAmericas, in the first quarter, Bahia state in Brazil recorded a cumulative mining output value of 2.6 billion reais (US$514 million), representing an 18% year-on-year increase and further solidifying its position as the country's third-largest mining state.
Gold accounts for 29.8% of total revenue, while nickel and copper account for 19.1% and 17.1%, respectively.
Bahia state’s mining output accounts for about 5% of Brazil’s total mining output, placing it behind Pará and Minas Gerais states.
In the coming months, Bahia state will see a major iron ore project come online, and as a result, its mining output growth rate will exceed that of the other two states.
Bamin, a subsidiary of Kazakhstan’s Eurasian Resources Group, is investing 20 billion reais to expand the Pedra de Ferro iron ore mine in Caetité. At the same time, the company is extending the West-East Railway (FIOL) and constructing an integrated port complex at Porto Sul.
The Pedra iron ore mine began production in 2021, with an initial capacity of 1.07 million tons. Bamin expects to increase this capacity to 26 million tons by 2026, by which time the FIOL railway line and the Porto Sul port will be completed and operational.
According to statistics from the Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram), mining project investments in Brazil are projected to reach US$50 billion from 2023 to 2027, with Bahia state accounting for US$10.2 billion of that total.
