According to MiningWeekly, citing Bloomberg, Australia may accelerate the implementation of its tax incentives for critical mineral refining following an announcement by a major lithium producer that it is shutting down half of its production capacity.
　　Albemarle announced that it will shut down two processing facilities at its Kemerton smelter in Western Australia for “maintenance and repairs,” and will also abandon plans to build a third facility. This decision will result in the loss of 300 jobs.
　　Australian Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King responded by saying that the government will accelerate the implementation of a key mineral processing tax incentive program totaling A$8.8 billion. This measure was announced in this year’s budget and will be implemented in the 2027-28 fiscal year.
　　“We’re preparing to implement it ahead of schedule,” Madeleine King said in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Thursday, adding that she acknowledged this might not necessarily help Alab.
　　This U.S. company, the world’s largest lithium producer, has been consistently affected by the decline in prices of this battery metal—driven by oversupply and slower-than-expected growth in electric vehicle sales. The downturn has also been influenced by policies pursued by the United States and its allies to develop domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on foreign sources.
　　Madeleine King said she will hold talks with other Australian mining companies, encouraging them to stick to their critical minerals investment plans.
　　“I’ll be meeting with them to explain what they can gain from production tax incentive policies and do my best to persuade them to build more lithium-processing facilities in this country,” she told ABC.
