According to the newly released “Land and Resources”... “ 13th Five-Year Plan ” The “Science and Technology Innovation Development Plan” outlines that, over the next five years, China will deepen research on geoscientific big data and knowledge discovery related to Earth’s systems; advance polar and planetary geological studies; strengthen exploration in areas such as polar geology, polar geophysical prospecting, glacier movement and deformation, polar environmental changes, polar energy and ecological resources, ice-drilling technologies, and microbiology in ice cores; and carry out research on the establishment of test sites for Mars and the Moon. “ Earth-Moon-Mars ” Conduct comparative studies to advance remote sensing identification and interpretation of the material composition and geological structures of the Moon and Mars, as well as integrated research on their evolutionary analysis. Carry out comprehensive interpretations of lunar gravity and magnetic fields and studies on deep subsurface structures. Organize geological mapping of both the Moon and Mars.
Why does the geology community study planetary geology? According to a responsible official from the China Geological Survey, the Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite, while Mars is a planet just like Earth. A deeper understanding of Earth’s system cannot be achieved without studying the Moon and Mars. Since 2007, the China Geological Survey has organized and carried out research on lunar remote sensing geology, the lunar gravity field, lunar mapping, comparative site selection for Mars exploration fields, and miniature drilling rigs, achieving significant progress in these areas.
It is reported that, as a national public-interest geological institution engaged in basic geological surveys, mineral resource exploration and evaluation, scientific research, and geoscientific information services, the China Geological Survey will, in accordance with the "Land and Resources..." “ 13th Five-Year Plan ” In accordance with the “Science and Technology Innovation Development Plan,” we will continue to carry out geological research on the Moon and Mars, actively engage in international cooperation, and make positive contributions to humanity’s deep-space exploration.
