The Central Geological Exploration Fund has newly discovered 15 mineral deposits.

In 2013, the Central Geological Exploration Fund project discovered 15 new mineral deposits, including 3 large-scale or larger deposits and 5 medium-sized deposits. According to the recently released “Annual Report of the Central Geological Exploration Fund Project (2013),” from 2006 to 2013, the Central Geological Exploration Fund project has cumulatively identified a total of 83 large- and medium-sized mineral deposits. The exploration results of the Daying uranium deposit in Hangjin Banner, Inner Mongolia, were honored with recognition as one of the Top Ten Geological Prospecting Achievements of 2013 by the Geological Society of China.
The annual report shows that in 2013, the Central Geological Exploration Fund carried out fieldwork on a total of 63 mineral exploration projects, covering such mineral types as coal, uranium, iron ore, manganese ore, copper and polymetallic ores, lead-zinc, tungsten, bauxite, gold, niobium-tantalum, tin, antimony, mercury, rare-earth metals, rock salt, and fluorite. The projects cumulatively completed 142,859 cubic meters of trenching and 187,111 meters of drilling. Throughout the year, 18 projects completed review of their final reports, and several major projects continued to expand their findings. In the Panzhihua Iron Ore Integrated Exploration Area in Sichuan, three preliminary exploration projects significantly increased their resource estimates: after expert review, the submitted reserves of iron ore reached 3.5 billion tons—classifying them as super-large-scale deposits. Additionally, associated resources of titanium dioxide totaled 240 million tons, and vanadium pentoxide amounted to 6.84 million tons, both reaching large-scale levels. Among these, the newly added iron ore reserves in 2013 totaled 2.7 billion tons, titanium dioxide reserves stood at 200 million tons, and vanadium pentoxide reserves reached 5.16 million tons. In the Wuzhengdao Bauxite Integrated Exploration Area in Guizhou, the two projects at Dongshan and Mazhongling estimated bauxite ore reserves of 66.47 million tons each, both exceeding large-scale thresholds; of this amount, the newly added bauxite ore reserves in 2013 totaled 16.47 million tons. In Ruoqiang County, Xinjiang, the preliminary exploration work on the Pobei Nickel Deposit has been completed, and the reviewed results indicate nickel resources exceeding 1.38 million tons—also qualifying as a super-large-scale deposit. Of this amount, the newly added nickel resources in 2013 totaled 80,000 tons.
The Central Geological Exploration Fund has also achieved new breakthroughs in geological research. The special research project on the Daying uranium deposit has yielded a series of innovative findings in ore-forming theory and technical methods, enriching the theoretical framework for sandstone-type uranium deposits and bringing the overall level of exploration for sandstone-type uranium deposits in continental basins to an internationally advanced standard. These achievements provide a solid geological theoretical foundation and technical support for the successful implementation and wider application of the new approach of “simultaneous exploration for coal and uranium,” and also serve as a basis for further expanding the exploration results at the Daying uranium deposit and for planning new uranium exploration efforts. Meanwhile, strategic selection projects targeting single mineral resources—potash, chromite, and diamonds—have also made new progress, and exploration work for hidden mineral deposits in the central and eastern regions has been initiated. The project approval and management information system developed by the Central Geological Exploration Fund was awarded the Silver Prize for Outstanding Engineering in China’s Geographic Information Industry in 2013.
