According to Argus Metals on June 2, the Gabonese government recently announced that the country will halt all exports of unrefined manganese ore starting in 2029, in an effort to boost its industrial production capacity. The policy, which will take effect on January 1, 2029, aims to support the development of the domestic processing industry and increase national revenue. Gabon is the world’s second-largest producer of manganese ore, trailing only South Africa. Data from the U.S. Geological Survey indicate that last year, Gabon’s manganese output was estimated at 4.6 million tons, accounting for roughly one-quarter of global production. This policy shift could directly impact major global consumers of manganese, such as the United States and China. It is reported that last year, 63% of the manganese consumed by the United States was imported from Gabon.
