According to a report by Mining.com, the U.S.-led coalition hopes to leverage financial networks to attract more investment in mining projects.

　　Jose Fernandez, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, told Bloomberg that since the partnership began collaborating in 2022, the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) has announced support for 13 projects.

　　He said that, due to the decline in prices of critical metals, development finance and export credit agencies from 14 major Western countries and the European Union will partner with private companies to provide funding for an additional 32 projects.

　　“If half of these projects succeed within the next year and a half, that would be remarkable,” Fernández said.

　　The original intention behind establishing the MSP was to ensure a secure supply of critical minerals essential for high-tech and clean-energy applications. These critical minerals are used in electric vehicles, wind turbine generators, and missile guidance systems.

　　Fernández said that a recent initiative has been to accelerate the approval process.

　　“Companies have told us that they lost the bid—and they lost the project—because there were too many steps involved,” he said. “We need to step up our efforts in this regard; time waits for no one.”

　　Fernández emphasized the need for rapid access to financing. In the short term, falling prices of critical minerals benefit the manufacturing of batteries and high-tech equipment, but they also impact the development of new mining projects.

　　“In the long run, we’ve become accustomed to over-relying on surpluses, and history has shown us that this is more harmful than beneficial,” he said.

　　Financial and credit institutions within the organization, including the International Development Finance Corp. (IDFC) and the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM), will streamline project approval processes, and the relevant countries will collaborate to avoid duplication of effort.
