On December 12, Rio Tinto announced that it has approved a $2.5 billion investment to expand its Rincon lithium project in Argentina. The Rincon project will have an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate, comprising a 3,000-ton startup plant and a 57,000-ton expansion plant. Construction of the expansion plant is scheduled to begin in mid-2025, subject to obtaining the necessary permits. The plant is expected to start production for the first time in 2028 and will take three years to ramp up to full capacity.
